The Best Of Oats!
Oats haven’t been a favourite with many in the
past, but with its health benefits coming to light, people are now realising
its worth and adding it as an important ingredient in their diets.
Because oats can be grown even on the weakest soil,
it was first grown as livestock feed. Later, around the 2000 BC, people in
Poland and Scandinavia observed oats to be growing better there than wheat. The
initial use of oats, except for serving the purposes of feeding animals was to
make ale or beer. People used to sometimes ground oats into a flour and use it
to make bread. The rest of the times, it was boiled with water and made into a
thick soup.
The humble ‘oats’ have come a long way since then.
As it has got a delicate and bland taste, it can take up flavours really well.
To find a grain that can absorb many flavours is otherwise difficult. Plus, the
fibrous nature makes it very healthy for the body. It easy to digest as well
and can be stored for long in dry and cool conditions, very easily.
Oats and health
Protects from
heart diseases – One of the major risk factors of heart diseases
is high blood cholesterol. Oats have a starch called beta-glucan that helps
deal with this problem. It lowers high cholesterol and reduces the risk of
certain cancers.
Helps in losing weight –
Oats are a rich source of fibre which helps the gastrointestinal
tract run smoothly. Studies suggest that consuming oats reduces hunger and also
helps stay full, thus, keeping your weight in check.
Rich in antioxidants – A unique group of
antioxidants are found in oats called avananthramides. It helps lower blood
pressure by growing the production of nitric oxide. This, in turn, helps expand
