Let’s Nacho!
They say you should
try and find happiness in the little and simple things in life, and we think
the best way to do that is to gorge on a plate of nachos. The little crisp tortilla
chips loaded with generous amount of melted cheese and jalapenos are something
to die for. Oh yes, these are triangles of happiness! The Tex-Mex treat, that
has now gained fame all over the world. Some like their share of nachos with
just melted cheese or with salsa, guacamole and sour cream or maybe just like a sole snack to munch on. The best part of this dish is that it can
serve as an appetizer, snack or some versions of it can also serve as a great
main dish.
Some historic evidence…
The term nacho has 2 meanings,
one is the slang used by the people in Texas and Mexico, and the other is a
long story. While there is no specific explanation as to how this tiny little
treat was created. But, there is quite an interesting tale which is worth knowing.
In the 1940s, an
incident took place in Piedras Negras, a small town in Mexico which was near a
US military base, in Texas. Some of the wives of the military men went out
shopping and stopped by for some food when they found out all the restaurants
were closed. A chef at a victory club, Ignacio Anaya took some pain and pity
and decided to cook something with the leftovers in the kitchen. He deep-fried
some tortilla chips, topped them with loads of cheddar cheese and jalapenos,
baked to perfection, and then served it as canapés. That’s when this little
treat came to existence with the second reason to call it nacho because
Ignacio’s nickname was Nacho!
